Focusing on the opportunity of learner autonomy, this project will develop training and methodology to enable informal learning coaches to support adults with limited literacy develop the skills they need to take charge of their own literacy learning. In addition to partners" expertise with low/non-literate learners, learner autonomy and learning for work, this approach draws on established and emerging areas of educational research and practice around adult literacy and language development, including work in the UK on literacy as social practice and work in the Netherlands and Germany on supporting learning beyond the classroom. The approach complements and reinforces existing investment in formal literacy learning. It addresses issues of capacity and cost within the adult education system. It has the potential to reach those individuals least likely to access formal literacy learning. Perhaps most significantly, it offers a new vision of shared social responsibility for adult literacy.
